Pittsburgh: Brutality Alleged in Honor Student Arrest(0)

On a cold Pittsburgh evening around 11:00 pm January 11, 2010, Miles Jordon, who had just turned 18 the day before, began his usual ritual of walking from his mother’s home to his grandmother’s home 5 blocks away in the Homewood neighborhood, where he spent most nights. The classical musician and Honor Student at Pittsburgh’s prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School never made it. The 5′6” 150 pound teenager who had been sheltered from street life by his family never had a chance.

Transgender persons are now 17 times more likely to be murdered than the national average, much higher than any demographic group. The murders are also more likely than not to be solved (a suspect is arrested, tried, and convicted of some crime for the death). Murder remains one of the leading causes of death for transgender persons in the United States (according to experts and available government statistics, Mortality and Morbidity reports, etc).

Hate 101: The Cyber Bully

Many cyber bullies are serial bullies, and are also serial attention-seekers. More than anything else they want attention. It doesn’t matter what type of attention they get, positive or negative, as long as they can provoke someone into paying them attention. It’s like a 2-year-old child throwing a tantrum to get attention from a parent. The best way to treat bullies is to refuse to respond and to refuse to engage them – which they really hate.

Hate Crime Charged in New Year’s Day Stabbing

The attack left Harmon with a severe cut to her right eyelid and eyeball. “I have a long road ahead of me before I physically recover from this attack, but mentally I will never be the same again,” Harmon stated. “My life and the life for my family changed forever on New Year’s Eve.”
