Media Hypocrisy and Helen Thomas

So far as this writer is concerned, Thomas was a target from the start. She is a woman, and one of many firsts, in a male dominated industry and society. She is a liberal intellectual in a nation that is increasingly turning to corporate fascism. But, most of all, she questions authority, and has done so for over half a century.

The Butcher’s Bill: May 2010

This will not be a regular column, per se, if for no other reason than simply covering such stories takes a serious emotional toll on me. But, the stories need to be told, so this column will appear periodically. It will be by no means complete, but I will try my best.

Bad Questions to Ask a Transsexual: Old Version

A friend of mine sent me this video, which is, to say the least, hilarious! It’s somewhat in keeping with the current ongoing discussion on transphobia, so there’s considerable truth behind the humor (as is the case with much good humor). Calpernia Addams doesn’t hold back, lol.

Myra Chanel Ical, 51, Murdered

Transgender persons are now 17 times more likely to be murdered than the national average, much higher than any demographic group. The murders are also more likely than not to be solved (a suspect is arrested, tried, and convicted of some crime for the death). Murder remains one of the leading causes of death for transgender persons in the United States (according to experts and available government statistics, Mortality and Morbidity reports, etc).

When Will Obama Act?

…what is needed is not pretty speeches, not flowery press releases. We need action, leadership, and courage. We need a President willing to do what is right and just, regardless of politics, like Johnson. We need a tough Commander in Chief to end a senseless policy that harms national security, like Truman. We need a leader willing to take bold action for the good of ALL Americans, like FDR. We need a President who actually believes it is his or her job to uphold ALL of the Bill of Rights (especially Amendment XIV, Section 1), not just the parts he or she agrees with.

Carter Splits with Church over Women’s Rights, Equality

It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the convention’s leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be “subservient” to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service.
